Local
City Council Agenda 1/19/2010 PDF Print E-mail

This week, the city council will be looking at some important local issues. First on the agenda is the closing of the portion of Valley Road that is in front of the Atlas Roofing plant. This is considered a safety issue as there is foot traffic across that road by employees and residents are accused of driving too fast in the area. Closing this road will mean that residents of the Valley Road area will have to take a short detour of about 1.5 miles to get to the interstate.

Next on the agenda is the approval of a method of payment to raise the $1,050,000 that it is going to cost the city to kill the Threefoot project. That's a big chunk of money to have to pay for a project that won't be done, so it should be interesting to hear where the money will come from.

Probably the biggest vote facing the board is the vote on a smoking ban for the city. This issue has come up in the past and was passed by the board, only to be vetoed by the former mayor. This time, our new mayor said during her campaign that she would support a smoking ban, but has now revised that stance. She is still "inclined" to go with the council decision, but wants to review the wording of the ordinance before deciding. Council president, Bobby Smith is confident he has the votes required to pass the ordinance.

The Council will also vote to approve new appointments to the Meridian Transit Authority.
