Sciples Mill Damaged By Recent Floods PDF Print E-mail

On the banks of the Running Tiger Creek in Kemper County, Mississippi, sits a real gem. While it's not a jewel or precious stone, in the literal sense of the word, Sciples Mill is an important part of our area's history. The mill came into existence in the year 1790 and was built by a Dr. Hunnelly. To put that into perspective, George Washington became our first president a year earlier in 1789, and Mississippi did not become a state until some 27 years later in 1817. The mill has been in constant working order for the past 219 years. The Sciple family purchased the mill sometime before 1850 and have been running it ever since. In the days before mechanization and grocery stores, the grist mill was a much more important part of life than it is today. The mill supplied corn meal to nearly everyone in the region.
